Order the NEW model JK 270 now! The new line of Joraform composters in the US includes the JK 270, with a volume of 59 – gallons; you can add up to 8 gallons of kitchen waste to it each week.
The Jora composter is undoubtedly the most efficient kitchen waste composter in the world. It was designed in Sweden to adhere to their tough recycling regulations and has been highly productive in households throughout Scandinavia for many years. One of the most important features is that it will compost all kitchen waste hygienically, with the minimum of fuss and mess, without worms or chemicals, and this process includes meat products and cooked food.
In Sweden:
- The JK 270 has been tested and evaluated in a project made up of 466 small homes, apartment buildings and classrooms.
- Many JK 270’s are also used in elementary schools and preschools where they are a good educational tool on recycling and reusing for students.
- The performance of these composters has been judged by the Swedish Authority for Environment Conservation as "most satisfactory".
The JK 270 has two compartments or sides. This design feature means that one side is being filled with new composting materials while the compost in the other compartment is maturing. Once the side being added to is full, the matured compost in the other compartment can be emptied, and the whole cycle can begin again.
Rodent Proof - The JK 270 is mounted on a stand, up off the ground so there is no opportunity for rodents or other pests to gain access into the composter.
What can be composted:
· The JK 270 composter will handle all organic waste generated by a regular household
· cooked as well as raw food scraps - vegetable, meat or fish
· Shredded cardboard
· Garden waste (except hard, woody stems and branches)
· Anything biodegradable - even pet waste!
Along with kitchen waste, which has high nitrogen (green) content, a source of carbon (brown) must be added to provide an food source for the microorganisms. However, even if the proper mix of five times “brown” materials to “green” isn’t achieved, you can still get fast and easy compost production in your JK270 by adding BiOWiSH™ Compost Boost to your compost. It generally takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks to transform kitchen waste into finished compost - so once both sides of the composter are in operation, you should be emptying one compartment every 3-4 weeks or so. This compost needs no further finishing and can be worked or tilled directly into the garden as a soil additive or as a top dressing mulch. It has the same nutritional value as cow manure but will not burn plants.
Our Experience with the JK 270:
We were able to produce compost during the winter months when temperatures regularly got down to below 20 degrees F at night. It took us about 4 weeks to fill one compartment, which was then 'maturing' for another 4 weeks while the other side was filled - a total of 8 weeks from filling with kitchen waste into its transformation to finished compost. During the summer the process will only take about 3-4 weeks.
